Field Hockey Slips at Cortland, 3-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team fell at Cortland, 3-0, in its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season finale, Wednesday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Cortland got on the board with 18:56 left in the first half after Jess Gibaldi deflected a rebound into the Knights goal during a penalty corner. 
  • Molly Quinlan scored on an eight-yard shot from the right wing that deflected off the right post to give the Red Dragons a two-goal lead with 17:49 left in regulation. 
  • Gibaldi tipped a slow-rolling ball inside the right post with 7:38 on the clock to close the scoring. 

MATCH NOTES 

  • Geneseo trailed in shots, 6-4, at halftime but finished the game tied, 11-11. 
  • The Knights were held scoreless for only the second time this season (Sept. 8 at Skidmore, 1-0) after out-scoring its previous seven opponents, 25-4. 
  • Geneseo closed the SUNYAC regular season with a 4-2 record and has already clinched a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament. Based on the results of the remaining two conference games (New Paltz at Oneonta on Friday, Brockport at Cortland on Saturday) the Knights could be seeded as high as second, or as low as the fourth for the postseason, as follows:
    • Oneonta/Brockport Wins - Geneseo 2nd Seed
      Oneonta/Cortland Wins - Geneseo 3rd Seed
      New Paltz/Brockport Wins - Geneseo 3rd Seed
      New Paltz/Cortland Wins - Geneseo 4th Seed
