GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Giovanna Fasanello was named the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Offensive Player of the Week, announced Wednesday, on the eve of the Knights' NCAA Division III Tournament opener.
Fasanello notched a hat trick to register all of her team's goals in a 3-2 overtime victory against Oneonta in the SUNYAC Championship contest on Saturday. Fasanello twice brought the Knights back from deficits in regulation, tying the game at 1-1 in the 45th minute and again to even the score at 2-2 in the 65th minute. She scored the title-winning goal for the Knights in the 77th minute for the victory.
Fasanello, who was also named SUNYAC Tournament MVP, also played a key role in Geneseo's 1-0 win over New Paltz in the semifinals on Wednesday as she assisted on the lone goal in the 30th minute.
Fasanello's 48 points this fall are tied for the second-highest single-season total in program history, only trailing the 59 points scored by Kayla DeAngelis in 2013. Her 18 goals are the third-highest single season total, while her 12 assists are one short of the record 13 Michelle Milkovich totaled in 2010.
Fasanello enters Wednesday's NCAA Tournament first-round match-up at Keene State (2:00 p.m.) having scored 14 goals and eight assists during the Geneseo's (11-9) current 10-1 streak.
