GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Giovanna Fasanello scored three goals to lead the Knights to a 3-2 overtime victory over Oneonta in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Field Hockey Tournament Championship match, Saturday.

With the victory, Geneseo (11-9) clinches the conference's automatic bid to its second NCAA Division III Tournament. It is the squad's first NCAA berth since 2010.

Oneonta got on the board with 10:57 on the first-half clock for the lone goal of the period. Sophomore forward Allyson Wells made a nice play to strip a Geneseo defender of the ball on the right wing and centered a pass in front of the Knights' goal where senior forward Killeen Martin scored on an eight-yard shot inside the left post.

In the second half, Fasanello scored her first goal on a penalty shot after a Knights' penalty corner attempt was blocked off the body of an Oneonta defender. Fasanello flipped a shot inside the left post to knot the game, 1-1, with 25:52 left in regulation.

Oneonta quickly reclaimed a 2-1 edge after senior midfielder Anna Torri scored on a shot from the left side of the circle that made it through a crowd in front of the cage with 24:16 on the clock.

Fasanello re-tied the game on a penalty corner blast from the top of the circle off an insert by junior midfielder Morgan Maley with 5:29 remaining.

In overtime it was the Knights taking control of the attack, scoring the game-winner on its fourth penalty corner attempt. Fasanello's initial shot from the top of the circle was saved off the pads of Red Dragon first-year goalie Danell Jones, but the loose ball took a long deflection out to junior midfielder Tess Necaise on the left side of the circle. Necaise flipped a pass toward the right post where a charging Fasanello dove to just get her stick on the ball for the game-winning tally from three yards away.

Geneseo now awaits the announcement of the field for the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament, to be released on Sunday night at a undetermined time. Check back on geneseoknights.com for the latest information.
