Field Hockey Comes Up Short, 5-2, At Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore midfielder Maria Dillingham and junior midfielder Giovanna Fasanello each tallied a goal, but it was Cortland defeating the visiting Knights, 5-2, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both squads.

Cortland built a 2-0 halftime lead before Dillingham deflected a Fasanello pass into the net 1:38 into the second half to make it a one-goal game.

However, it was the Red Dragons (4-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) scoring three goals in a six-minute span to take a 5-1 lead in the 49th minute that proved to be the difference.

Fasanello scored a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Tess Necaise in the 61st minute, but it was not enough for Geneseo (0-6, 0-1 SUNYAC).

The Knights return to action next Friday (Sept. 23) with a 2:00 p.m. home SUNYAC match with Oneonta.
