CANTON, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior Tessa Horn finished 10th in the Walk Trot class at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 2 Championships at St. Lawrence University's Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall on Saturday. Horn qualified for the event by winning the Region 2 Walk Trot classification last weekend, also hostec by St. Lawrence.
Zone 2 of the IHSA consists of 58 schools in five different regions, including the 10 schools from Region 2, which includes Geneseo. Region 2 proved its reputation as one of the toughest regions in the zone, with riders from member schools capturing Novice Fences, Intermediate Fences, Open Fences and Walk Trot Canter in the first part of the competition. The top-two finishers in each classification advance to the IHSA National Championships on May 5 in Lexington, Ky.
Horn was the third rider in the past three seasons to capture a Regional Championship. Senior Katherine Nickels won the Novice Fences last year, while Allie Catalino '14 captured the same class in 2013-14. Catalino finished second at the Zone Championships that year, becoming only the second Geneseo competitor to show at the National Championship, joining Katie Roberts, who qualified in 2010.
