CANTON, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior Tessa Horn captured the Walk Trot at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 2, Region 2 Championships, helping to lead the Knights' equestrian team to ten ribbons on the day. Horn's finish qualifies her for the Zone Championships next Saturday, April 9, also at St. Lawrence. The top-two riders in each classification earned the right to move on to the next level of competition.
Eight other riders joined Horn with award-winning rides. Seniors Katherine Nickels (Intermediate Fences), Jordan Powers (Novice Flat) and Emma Witherwax (Novice Fences) had fourth-place rides; Nickels (Intermediate Flat) and Emily Lindsay (Novice Fences), along with junior Jillian VanBrunt (Advanced Walk Trot Canter) finished in sixth place in their respective classes; junior Amy Kelley (Novice Fences) and senior Jenelle Wallace (Walk Trot Canter) each took a seventh; and sophomore Samantha Childs (Advanced Walk Trot Canter) claimed an eighth-place finish.
Senior Grace Floros (Advanced Walk Trot Canter) and junior Elizabeth Hasho (Advanced Walk Trot Canter) also competed on Saturday after pointing out during the season, while Lindsay and Witherwax also rode in the Novice Flat class.
Horn is the third rider in the past three seasons to capture a Regional Championship. Nickels won the Novice Fences last year, while Allie Catalino '14 captured the same class in 2013-14. Catalino subsequently finished second at the Zone Championships that year, becoming only the second Geneseo competitor to show at the National Championship, joining Katie Roberts, who qualified in 2010.
