GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's and women's swimming & diving teams each won both of their dual meets this past week as junior Mitchell Phelps, first-year Corey Wirth and sophomore Alyssa Vadala each put up outstanding performances, garnering them State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) weekly awards.
Phelps was named SUNYAC Men's Swimmer of the Week after he led the Knights to a pair of victories this week, helping them upset No. 16 Case Western Reserve, 165-135, on Monday and leading them to a 181-112 victory over Rochester, Friday. On Monday, Phelps was a double-winner, taking first in the 200 fly (1:58.71) and the 100 fly (52.46) and swam the lead leg of the first-place 400 medley relay (3:33.13). Against Rochester, he led the Knights to a 200 medley relay win (1:36.28), took first in the 200 free (1:45.89) and the 200 back (1:55.66). He also touched up in the 200 IM at 1:59.94, which would have taken first had the Knights not been swimming exhibition at that point.
Wirth earned SUNYAC Men's Diver of the Week after earning a sweep of the diving events in each of the Knights' two meets. Against Case Western, Wirth scored 290.62 in the one-meter and 291.30 in the three-meter to win both events. Against Rochester, the first-year put up an 11-dive score of 492.80 in the one-meter and 547.40 in the three-meter.
Vadala nabbed her first SUNYAC Women's Diver of the Week award as she helped the Knights defeat No. 17 Case Western Reserve on Monday and knock off Rochester on Friday. The sophomore earned a pair of wins in the one-meter, scoring 304.57 in a six-dive format on Monday and then recording a first-place score of 478.85 in 11 dives on Friday. In the three-meter, she took second on both days, scoring 267.00 in six dives on Monday and 525.55 in 11 dives on Friday.
The Knights will host the Geneseo Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
