Three Knights Earn SUNYAC Weekly Honors

GENESEO, N.Y. - Three SUNY Geneseo student-athletes were recognized by the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), receiving SUNYAC Athlete of the Week awards in their respective sports. Women's cross country first-year Julia Hoyt was named Runner of the Week while women's soccer senior Rachel Walsh was named Defensive Player of the week and women's volleyball junior Grace Cergol was named Offensive Player of the Week. 

Hoyt finished first out of 66 runners to lead the Knights to a second-place finish at the Cardinal Early Season Invitational, hosted by St. John Fisher, Friday. She covered the 4,000-meter course in a time of 15:21.2, besting the field by nearly 25 seconds.

Walsh anchored a defensive unit that propelled 14th-ranked Geneseo to a pair of victories over the weekend. She and the Knights' defense limited opponents to just six shots, three on goal, combined as the team earned a pair of shutouts. Geneseo has shut out its opponent in five of its last eight contests, dating back to last season. 

Cergol was named Tournament MVP of the North Country Season Opener after leading the Knights to a 4-0 record to start the season. On Saturday, she notched 14 kills on 27 swings (.481 H%) to go along with 10 digs in a 3-1 win over Keuka before totaling 14 kills on 26 swings (.462 H%) and five digs in a 3-0 sweep of Coast Guard. For the weekend, she attacked at a .427 clip while averaging while averaging 4.33 kills/set.
