GENESEO, N.Y. - Recent SUNY Geneseo Isaac Garcia-Cassani and rising senior Luke Holtzman were named first-team members of the 2018 Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Division III Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Team, announced Tuesday. The first two track & field cross country Acadademic All-Americans in program history, only six other Knights have ever been named Academic All-America.
Geneseo joined Central (Iowa) as the only institutions with two individuals on the 15-member first-team and was the only public institution out of seven schools that had multiple honorees out of the 45 total student-athletes recognized.
Garcia-Cassani was a four-time national champion and 13-time All-American over the last four years. Graduating with a 3.34 grade point average majoring in physics, he closed his Geneseo career by defending his title in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. This past winter, he anchored Geneseo's national champion distance medley relay team and finished second in the 3,000 a year after winning the mile national championship. He also logged top-10 finishes at the last three NCAA Cross Country Championships, including a fourth-place effort to lead the Knights to a national runner-up finish in 2016.
Holtzman led off Geneseo's national champion distance medley relay this past winter after also winning the mile at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships. Finishing runner-up to Garcia-Cassani in the 1,500 at the SUNYAC Outdoor Championships last month, Holtzman wrapped up a junior campaign that included being tabbed a recipient of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship as well as the SUNYAC Indoor Track & Field Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The chemistry and physics double-major enters his senior year with a 3.94 grade point average.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average in at least their sophomore season and be a starter or key reserve on the team. Garcia-Cassani and Holtzman landed First-Team Academic All-District selection earlier this month and moved on to the national ballot with the first-team honorees from eight districts across the country.
