ALBANY, N.Y. - Six SUNY Geneseo student-athletes were recognized by State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson for outstanding academic excellence and athletic achievement with the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award, announced on Thursday.
Women's track & field graduate Marissa Cossaro '17, women's cross country and track & field junior Elise Ramirez, equestrian sophomore Sarea Shariff, men's swimming & diving senior Jeff Doser, women's swimming & diving senior Natalie LaCourt, men's track & field junior Luke Holtzman and women's track & field junior Laura Piazza were each recognized by the Chancellor. With seven recipients of the presitigous award, Geneseo had the most honorees among all of New York's state institutions.
A total of 84 student-athletes garnered the 2017-18 Scholar Athlete Award. In order to be considered for this award, student athletes were nominated by their campus athletic director. Nominees' academic credentials and athletic accomplishments were then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across the SUNY system and members of the SUNY provost's office.

SUNY offers athletic opportunities at all levels of competition, ranging from intramurals and club sports to nationally-ranked NCAA, NJCAA, NAIA or USCAA sports teams. Statewide, SUNY has more than 85 NCAA Division I, 290 NCAA Division III, and 385 NJCAA athletic teams, as well as hundreds of non-competitive athletics clubs.
