CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sits in first place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings following the completion of the winter conference championship season, announced Wednesday.
Geneseo leads the conference with a composite score of 9.07 points after capturing six of the possible seven SUNYAC titles this winter. The Knights repeated as conference champions in men's and women's indoor track and field while men's swimming & diving won its fifth-consecutive title and women's swimming & diving earned its 11th-straight championship. The women's basketball team claimed its first conference crown since 2015 while the men's ice hockey team snagged its second SUNYAC Championship in the past three years. The men's basketball team finished fourth in the regular season standings and clinched its seventh-consecutive playoff berth, but fell in the first round.
Geneseo has won 10 of 14 possible SUNYAC Championships so far this year, including SUNYAC titles in women's soccer, women's tennis as well as men's and women's cross country. The Knights seek their fourth-consecutive SUNYAC Commissioner's Cup after winning the title in each of the last three academic years. Prior to the Knights' streak, Cortland had won 11-straight Commissioner's Cups, from 2004-14.
The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points and so on. A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
