GENESEO, N.Y. - Four SUNY Geneseo student-athletes were selected as State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Athletes of the Week, announced on Monday. Women's swimming & diving first-year Noelle Staso, men's swimming & diving senior Samuel Randall, men's track & field senior Isaac Garcia-Cassani and men's ice hockey sophomore Tyson Empey were each named Athlete of the Week for their respective sport.
Staso earned five first-place finishes, including three individual events, as the Knights rolled to a 240-107 victory over local rival Rochester on Friday and Saturday. Staso placed first in the 100 Breast (1:07.98), 200 IM (2:14.33) and the 50 Free (25.10) and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay (1:50.08) and 400 medley relay (4:06.51) to pace the Knights.
Randall set a pair of program records to help the Knights earn a dual meet victory over Rochester, taking first place in both of the diving events on Friday and Saturday. In the one-meter, Randall set a SUNYAC and Geneseo record, scoring 571.05 in 11 dives. On the three-meter, the senior set a Geneseo program record with a score of 591.08, just three points shy of the SUNYAC record.
Garcia-Cassani posted the fifth-best mile time in Division III this winter (4:12.00) at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic, Saturday. He finished 43rd in a field that included open runners from around the world as well as DI and DII competitors.
Empey scored a career-high five points in the Knights 7-4 victory at Plattsburgh on Saturday as Geneseo clinched its eighth-straight postseason berth. Assisting the first three goals of the game, Empey notched two goals in the third period, including his ninth power-play tally of the season that is currently tied for first in Divison III.
