GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore outside hitter Grace Cergol was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week while junior Emily Janiszewski was named SUNYAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday.
Cergol averaged 26.3 kills and 20.6 digs in three matches to be named to the All-Tournament Team at the MIT Invitational. In a five-set outing against Springfield, Cergol compiled career-highs with 29 kills and 27 digs. She also had 27 kills and 18 digs against Wellesley, as well as 23 kills and 17 digs against Babson. The Knights went 1-1 on the weekend.
Janiszewski posted a pair of shutout victories for the Knights in wins over Nazareth, 2-0, and Skidmore, 2-0. The junior made seven saves against Nazareth and turned away six against Skidmore as the Knights improved to 4-0-0 on the season. Janiszewski and Geneseo's defense have combined for three consecutive shutouts and have not allowed a goal in 342 consecutive minutes, dating back to their first game of the year at St. Lawrence on Sept. 1.
The Geneseo volleyball team will host Pitt.-Bradford in its home-opener on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m while the Geneseo women's soccer team hosts No. 4 William Smith on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
