Six Knights Receive SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award

ALBANY, N.Y. - Six SUNY Geneseo student-athletes were recognized by State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher for outstanding academic excellence and athletic achievement with the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award, announced on Thursday.

Men's soccer senior Brad Campion, women's cross country and track & field senior Marissa Cossaro, men's swimming junior Jeff Doser, men's cross country and track & field junior Isaac Garcia-Cassani, women's basketball senior Kara Houppert and women's tennis junior Lauren Salzano were each recognized by the Chancellor. With six recipients of the presitigous award, Geneseo had the most honorees among all New York State NCAA Division III affiliates and tied Stony Brook University for the most award winners among all SUNY institutions.

A total of 77 student-athletes garnered the 2016-17 Scholar Athlete Award. In order to be considered for this award, student athletes were nominated by their campus athletic director. Nominees' academic credentials and athletic accomplishments were then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across the SUNY system and members of the SUNY provost's office.

SUNY offers athletic opportunities at all levels of competition, ranging from intramurals and club sports to nationally-ranked NCAA, NJCAA, NAIA or USCAA sports teams. Statewide, SUNY has more than 85 NCAA Division I, 290 NCAA Division III, and 385 NJCAA athletic teams, as well as hundreds of non-competitive athletics clubs.
