GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season and looks forward to seeing everyone in 2017!
An integral part of the Geneseo student-athlete experience is giving back. At this time of year, we like to look back at all the teams and individuals from across the department that volunteered their time to make a difference in the community throughout the semester.
Community Leaf Raking
All 20 teams and over 400 members of the Geneseo Athletic Department spent a November Sunday raking leaves and clearing out the yards of over 50 houses in the greater Geneseo area.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
Multiple teams participated in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Rochester. The men's and women's swimming & diving teams totaled $6,181 in donations to finish as the fourth-highest group out of the 452 that took part in the event.
Women's Volleyball Second-Annual Attacking Alzheimer's Match
The women's volleyball team sold t-shirts and collected donations in an effort to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease in conjunction with their home match against St. John Fisher on Oct. 19. The program generated over $750, which was given to the Alzheimer's Association of the Rochester and Finger Lakes Region.
Teddy Bear Toss
Nearly 650 assorted stuffed animals and over $200 were collected during the men's ice hockey team's annual Teddy Bear Toss on Dec. 2 "The fur was flying" after the Knights scored their first goal in a 6-1 victory over Fredonia, as all donations were split between two charities, Focus on the Children Catholic Charities of Livingston County and the Livingston County Department of Social Services.
Field Hockey/Women's Soccer Cancer Awareness Matches
Both the field hockey and women's soccer teams hosted cancer awareness contests during the semester. Each program sold t-shirts and raised awareness along with donations to benefit cancer research locally, including the American Breast Cancer Association and the Wilmot Cancer Institute in Rochester.
Men's Lacrosse Coat Drive
The men's lacrosse team went door-to-door throughout the Village of Geneseo in early December and collected over 60 winter coats as well as other assorted winter clothing that was donated to the Open Door Mission Homeless Shelter in Rochester.
Ice Hockey Teams Reads at Elementary School
Members of the men's ice hockey team spent a fall morning at Livonia Elementary School reading and sharing stories with several classes of students.
Teresa House Walk
Nearly 250 members of the department participated in the 2016 Teresa House Comfort Care Walk, raising over $1,200 that went directly toward the local facility that has provided a home-like setting for persons with terminal illnesses for over 20 years.
