GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior Sean Fischer and senior Ashton Hughes were both named First-Team Academic All-District Cross Country/Track & Field selections, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The duo moves on to the national ballot and will be in the running for Academic All-America honors.
A native of Pittsford, N.Y., Fischer owns a 3.74 grade point average double-majoring in mathematics and English literature. A two-time NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship qualifier, he captained the 2015 squad to third place at the national meet following team titles at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional and State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships. He logged a 19th-place individual finish in the Atlantic Regional race, despite losing a shoe in the opening minute of the race, and also logged a seventh-place effort at the conference championship to be named All-SUNYAC.
A Phi Beta Kappa inductee, Fischer is a two-time recipient of Scholar All-America honors from the United State Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Now a 10-time Dean's List honoree, he was named a SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award this year. The Presidential Scholar is also a seven-time SUNYAC All-Academic Team and six-time Commissioner's List pick. Last month, he was voted the 2016 Dr. Dan Mullin Scholar-Athlete Award as Geneseo's top male student-athlete during his career.
Hughes, who has compiled a 3.89 GPA majoring in geography, is a three-time NCAA Division III Cross Country qualifier. This past fall, she and the Knights finished national runner-up after winning the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional and the SUNYAC Championships. A two-time All-Atlantic Region finisher, the Fairport, N.Y. resident finished sixth in the 2014 meet. Hughes also competed at the 2015 NCAA Divsion III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 10,000 meters, logging a 17th-place finish.
A Phi Beta Kappa inductee, Hughes is a three-time USTFCCCA Scholar All-America. A six-time Dean's List honoree, she was named a SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award winner this year. The Presidential Scholar was also the chapter president of Gamma Theta Upsilon Geography Honor Society. The seven-time SUNYAC All-Academic Team and five-time Commissioner's List pick was voted the 2016 Dr. Myrtle Merritt Scholar-Athlete Award as Geneseo's top female student-athlete during her career.
The 2015-16 CoSIDA Academic All-America Cross Country/Track & Field Teams will be announced on Wednesday, June 22.
